Location

The Tarrytown neighborhood is located west of downtown and is bordered by Lake Austin Boulevard to the south, Lake Austin to the west, 35th street on the North, and Mopac to its east side. The neighborhood is located near the University and is known as one of the most prestigious Austin neighborhoods. The neighborhood is so popular for being so close to downtown and for its stunning homes. 
 

History

Originally, the land that now occupies Tarrytown was known as Woodlawn, where master builder Abner Cook built a mansion for Texas State comptroller, James Shaw. The initial phase of the Tarrytown development was in 1934 and was named after the controlling family's summer retreat home in Tarrytown, New York. The neighborhood has one of the most decorated pharmacies in the state, which opened up one day before Pearl Harbor in 1941. 
 

Architecture

The Tarrytown neighborhood displays a gorgeous range of architecture within its tree-canopied streets. The neighborhood is known for its classic styled homes, as a post-war neighborhood, many of the homes have private landscaping and are fairly traditional. Though recently the neighborhood has had some modern architecture coming into play. 
 

Recreation

You can find the Mayfield Preserve on the far north end of Tarrytown,  which is a delightful place for a picnic, complete with koi ponds and roaming peacocks. Spring-fed pool Deep Eddy Pool, which has a fun history complete with a swimming horse show, is nearby, as is the Lions Municipal Golf Course. And of course, Lake Austin boasts of one of Austin’s oldest public boat launches for Lake Austin: Walsh Boat Landing.
